Fire Alarm Wire

Fire alarm wire is used to connect life-saving fire alarm and smoke detectors to a network. They are manufactured to meet or exceed fire safety ratings established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The NFPA publishes the National Electrical Code (NEC), which regulates the installation of electric wiring in terms of fire safety.

Primus Cable’s fire alarm wire is manufactured to the highest standards, and comes in two general types: FPLP, or Power Limited Plenum, and FPLR, or Power Limited Riser.

With over one hundred different types of networking cable, make sure you have the correct cable selection to secure your fire alarm system. The NEC outlines acceptable limits for cable burning and smoke emissions, while the UL has established flame tests a cable must pass to qualify for fire ratings.

The type of fire alarm wire you choose for your project depends on where it is installed. Different standards apply to the cable depending on whether it is to be installed in plenum, non-plenum, or riser areas. Another consideration is the fire resistance of the cable (how long it will burn if it can burn), and the smoke propagation characteristics. The UL and NEC regulate fire alarm wire to ensure that it meets such safety standards.

For installation in plenum areas, Primus Cable offers FPLP fire alarm wire for installation in ducts and enclosed air spaces. Our FPLP Shielded Cable is safe for installation in environmental airflow spaces for wiring fire alarms, signal monitors, signal detection systems, and audio control circuits. This fire alarm wire meets UL and ETL specifications. It comes in both two conductor and four conductor versions and are shielded to protect against EMI.

Primus Cable also provides plenum rated fire alarm cable that is unshielded for applications where electromagnetic interference is not an issue. It also comes in both standard and data grade variants.

If your installation involves vertical runs of cable from floor to floor, Primus Cable provides FPLR Shielded Cable. This fire alarm cable has self-extinguishing characteristics so it resists burning and spreading flames from floor to floor. It also produces lower toxin levels in the event of a fire. To qualify as riser rated, this fire alarm cable rigid UL and ETL specifications. It is also shielded to protect against electronic interference.

Be sure you have adequate tools before your next install. Primus Cable provides excellent wire stripping and cutting tools like the Cable Stripper, All-In-One Stripping Tool for Data, Coax, Telephone Cable. This stripping tool comes in handy for preparing fire alarm wire for installation. Lightweight, compact, and versatile, the All-In-One Stripping Tool helps reduce installation time and costs. It has both cable cutting and stripping blades, and accommodates a wide range of materials including fire alarm, coax, twisted pair, security, telephone, and audio cables.
