In 1973, Nelson Jonnes, a Minnesota research chemist with more than a dozen patents under his belt, threw together some slippery ingredients in his basement and began selling it as a SCUBA diving-suit lubricant. It was well received, but the potential income from that alone could not support his family of six.

With a quick change of marketing focus in 1974, the fledgling company began selling the same technology to the telcom and power utility markets in the form of a unique, water-based cable pulling lubricant. It revolutionized the industry, which until then had used mud, wax, and grease. Polywater® Cable Pulling Lubricants have been the leaders ever since.

Over the years, the Polywater® line expanded greatly. Today, in addition to its twenty different formulations of pulling lubes for every type of wire and cable imaginable, the product line includes a broad range of cleaners and other specialty chemicals. These include cable cleaners, contact cleaners, general electrical cleaners, hot stick and boom truck cleaners, fiberglass wax and buffing kits, penetrating oils, cold galvanizing spray, alcohol wipes, cable removal aids, cable blowing lubricant, cable pulling software, training videos, MRO aerosols, pipe joint lubricant, pump packing installation lubricants, conduit coupling adhesives, conduit de-icers, lubricant pumps, cable handling gloves, duct sealants, sanding cloths, dry towelettes, winter-grade lubricants for cold weather applications, pressurized cable leak sealants, transformer leak sealants, hand and tool cleaners, rubber goods cleaner, and a host of other unique chemicals and accessories.

Polywater® FST MINI
Duct Sealant

Polywater® FST MINI is an expanding, quick-setting, “closed-cell foam”, which is injected into a conduit to provide a watertight seal. The seal is superior to pliable duct putties and “open-cell” aerosol canned foams. Polywater FST MINI comes in a kit that contains side-by-side cartridges filled with the two-part foam base. The two resins are mixed in equal parts as they are pushed through the mixing nozzle. Once injected, the foam expands and hardens, keeping water, acids, greases, gases, insects, and rodents, etc., out of the conduit. The foam has good wetting and adhesion to metals, plastics, and concrete. A special ratchet tool is used to inject the foam from the side-by-side cartridges.

Polywater FST MINI meets and exceeds all of the NEC code requirements for sealing conduit:  2011 NEC Articles 225.27, 230.8, 300.5 (G), 300.7 (A) on Raceway Seals, and 501.15 (B)(2).  It also meets Class 1, Div 2, cold storage entrances approximate R-Value of 6.5 per inch.

Polywater® AFT
Spray Foam Sealant

AFT closed-cell sealant provides 10 feet of water-blocking in electrical and communication ducts. Because it is a two-part system, humidity is not required for the cure. There is a consistent cure strength throughout the seal. Closed-cell AFT Sealant offers durability as well as ease of use.

AFT shows excellent adhesion to a variety of conduits. AFT seals conduit faster and with better performance than duct putty or one-part insulating foams.  The two-part aerosol foam expands to fill any size void. The AFT aerosol spray package comes with multiple actuators, which allow the sealing of multiple ducts.

Polywater® PedFloor
Pedestal Sealant Foam Barrier

Hardening the outside plant is a common goal for communications companies, but standard practice has not, in many cases, effectively prevented entry from the ground inside cabinets, enclosures, and pedestals.

Polywater® PedFloor™ Pedestal Sealant helps prevent outages and service disruptions by curing to a structural barrier that is resilient and impermeable. This pedestal seal keeps out moisture and stops rodents, snakes, and insects from burrowing into the enclosure and causing costly outages or health and safety hazards.

Polywater® UPR
Utility Wood Pole Repair

Polywater® UPR™ Utility Pole Repair makes it easy to repair woodpecker damage and pole line hardware holes on utility poles. The two-part formula is mixed quickly and injected into the hole through the 8” mixing nozzle. Partially used cartridges can be resealed and reused with a new nozzle.

The UPR™ Pole Repair resin and hardener were specially formulated to expand in the pole cavity rather than to just fill. Because UPR™ Pole Repair expands in the hole, it easily fills irregularly shaped cavities for solid integration with the wood. This creates superior adhesion to the wood grain compared to non-expanding products.

UPR™ Pole Repair hardens just like wood so it is gaffable and will not chip out when climbers’ hooks are used.

UPR can be used to repair Penta treated wood, Western Red Cedar, Douglas Fir, Red Pine, Southern Yellow Pine, Lodgepole Pine poles and other varieties of wood.

Polywater® AirRepair®
Pressurized Cable Leak Repair System

Polywater® AirRepair® Sealant is a revolutionary leak repair system for pressurized telephone cables and splices. AirRepair Sealant seals air leaks in lead-sheathed cables and splice enclosures, polyethylene “Stalpeth®” cable jackets, load coils, end-plates, and more. AirRepair Sealant eliminates messy and dangerous molten lead “hot wipe” procedures. AirRepair Sealant allows a single craftsperson, with minimal training, to effectively and economically seal 20 or more leaks per day.

AirRepair Sealant is a 2-part, fast-curing, gray paste. The AirRepair Sealant 2-part paste is packed in an easy-to-use system. Pre-measured packaging contains enough material to seal one typical leak, approximately 6 square inches at a coating thickness of 1/4 inch.

AirRepair Sealant is a no-sag paste that, once mixed, can be immediately applied to the cable or splice underside, along seams, and in the “crotch” area. The sealant will hold air pressure within 10 minutes of mixing and application. The sealant cures at ambient temperatures as low as 40°F, forming a tough seal. The cured seal is resistant to water, salt, oils, and other manhole contaminants.

Polywater® PowerPatch®
PILC Leak Repair

Polywater® PowerPatch® permanently seals punctures or cracks in hard-to-reach areas, such as crotches where multiple lead cables enter a splice.  It fixes active leaks fast and has flexible strength to absorb some movement when cables must be adjusted. The two-part PowerPatch resin and hardener don’t require a torch to cure, increasing safety in manhole or vault situations where torches are not allowed. The finished patch is resistant to transformer oil and has held oil pressures in excess of 20 psi in paper insulated lead cable systems.

Preparation is important, and the kit approach provides everything needed to do the job, although in instances of excessive oil leakage or dirt accumulation, separate scrubbing rags such as Grime-Away Cleaning Wipes are helpful. Polywater® Type RP
Fast-Evaporating Cable Cleaner

Polywater® Type RP Rapid Power medium voltage cable cleaner evaporates quickly without the health and safety issues of other volatile cable cleaners. Type RP is packaged several ways to make cleaning and maintenance safer and easier.

The Pel-Pac single wipes are lint-free and saturated with the optimal amount of solvent for the job. The RP-1L wipes easily fit into tool bags, nose bags, and splicer tool buckets. Pre-packaged wipes ensure the use of a lint-free towel, limit the solvent exposure, eliminate waste, and properly prep the cable. Rubber Goods Cleaner

Polywater® RBG
Insulated Rubber Goods Cleaner

Polywater® Rubber Goods Cleaner is a specially formulated water-based cleaner for removing grease, dirt, carbon, creosote, and other grimes from insulating blankets, lineman’s gloves, rubber sleeves, jumper cables, hot jumpers, and line-hose. Rubber Goods Cleaner is safe for use on all natural and synthetic rubbers.  Unlike other water-based rubber cleaners, Rubber Goods Cleaner contains no hazardous ingredients and is pH neutral, making it safe for use on skin. Rubber Goods Cleaner is also completely biodegradable and safe for the environment.

Why Clean and Inspect Live Line Rubber Goods on a Regular Basis?

Cleaning of rubber protective equipment is necessary not only for visual inspections but to preserve electrical integrity, remove incompatible contaminants, and extend its useful life. Creosote, dirt, grease, and other contaminants can be conductive, especially when combined with moisture from rain, snow, and fog. Protective equipment should be cleaned daily and whenever it appears dirty with contaminants.

Strong industrial cleaners and solvents such as petroleum distillates and d-Limonene may cause permanent damage to the rubber protective equipment. These products may cause rubbers to swell, soften, and lose electrical insulating properties. EPDM rubber is used for protective equipment because it has excellent resistance to ultraviolet light, ozone, and oxidants, but it has poor solvent resistance, making it susceptible to chemical damage.

Daily use of Rubber Goods Cleaner makes inspection of protective equipment easier and helps to maintain its electrical insulating properties.

Hot Stick Cleaner & Water Repellant Wipe

Polywater® Hot Stick Cleaner
& Water-Repellent Wipe

Use Polywater® S-1 wipes to meet the cleaning requirements of the OSHA Live-Line Tool Standard. OSHA requires that “Each live-line tool shall be wiped clean and visually inspected for defects before use each day.” See sidebar for the regulation details. The OSHA Live Line Tool Standard notes that “a hot stick can become electrically unsafe because of … a combination of wetting, surface contamination, and a loss of surface gloss …” and ” … the best defense against accidents is a clean, glossy stick that causes water to bead up …”

The IEEE maintenance standard #978 states the best way to clean a stick is to use isopropyl alcohol followed by a silicone wiping cloth. The S-1 cleverly combines both alcohol and silicone to clean and protect a stick in one easy step. S-1 wipes won’t add a static charge to hot sticks, unlike silicone wiping cloths. Once a dirty stick is wiped down with a silicone wiping cloth; the cloths become contaminated and lose their effectiveness.

The Polywater S-1 is amazingly effective at cleaning telescoping/extendo sticks so they glide into position instead of sticking. The Polywater S-1 makes a big difference when cleaning and protecting shotgun sticks, hot sticks, bracing arms, cutters, and jumper holders.

Polywater® BOOM Prewash Wipes are saturated towels that clean grease, tar, creosote, salt spray, hydraulic fluid, pine pitch, insects and road debris off insulated fiberglass boom arms, insulators, and buckets.  Tracking on insulated bucket trucks occurs when too much residue builds up and allows a pathway for electrical current.  It is important to clean and inspect boom and bucket trucks on a regular basis.

Dirt accumulated during normal use can affect a boom’s dielectric properties. Annual dielectric testing is not enough to ensure safe operation. Insulated areas of a boom truck should be cleaned regularly with an approved product such as Polywater Boom Wash to reduce risk for personnel. Common degreasers and solvents can actually harm booms by stripping the gel coat and causing weak or soft spots. Cleaners and protectants designed specifically for fiberglass booms are recommended.

Once the boom is properly cleaned, apply a good wax to protect the surface and force water beading during misty or wet weather. Polywater manufactures a specialty fiberglass wax available in pint cans (cat #W-16) or individual towelettes (cat #W-1). All products used on a boom truck should be approved by the aerial lift manufacturer.

Companies should follow boom truck manufacturer guidelines on the frequency of dielectric testing, proper cleaning practice, and other maintenance procedures. The ANSI A92.2-1990 Standard (Section 5.4.3) also addresses proper dielectric testing intervals and field inspections for aerial truck testing.

Fiberglass Wax & Buff

Polywater® Fiberglass Wax & Buff Kit

Polywater® Wax was formulated especially for hot sticks and insulating boom arms to haze quickly and buff out easily.  This carnuba-based wax restores the luster of the fiberglass to help protect the gel coat. It beads water on the insulating surface to inhibit tracking. Waxing the insulating portion of boom arms and buckets after cleaning them with Polywater Boom Wash, or following dielectric testing, is a recommended maintenance practice. See the sidebar for boom truck cleaning guidelines.

OSHA states that hot sticks, booms, and other live-line tools “… can become electrically unsafe because of … a combination of wetting, surface contamination, and a loss of surface gloss …” and ” … the best defense against accidents is a clean, glossy stick that causes water to bead up …”

The ANSI A92.2-1990 Standard (Section 5.4.3) also addresses proper dielectric testing intervals and field inspections for aerial truck testing. By following manufacturer and industry guidelines on the maintenance of boom trucks, aerial fleets will be safer and last longer. Polywater Wax and Boom Wash aid conformance to these industry practices.

Solar Panel Cleaner

Polywater® SPW
Solar Panel Cleaner

A 2011 study by the World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology concluded that “accumulated dust on the surface of photovoltaic solar panels can reduce the system’s efficiency by up to 50%.” Other contaminants can be even worse. Panels must be cleaned for optimal performance. The small cost of regular cleaning with a specialty solar product yields big savings by increasing panel output.

Solar Panel Wash (SPW) was specially formulated to be compatible with the films that are used on solar panels. It cleans all types of solar panels without oxidizing or abrading aluminum rails and mounting apparatus. Many common soaps used for washing cars or windows contain alkalines that promote oxidation and require deionized water for a spot-free rinse. Dust, bird droppings, pollution, pollen, tree sap, plant matter residue, etc., all reduce the overall effectiveness of solar panel generation capacity.

Solar Panel Wash has been approved by SolarWorld, America’s Largest Solar Manufacturer since 1975.  We have also received an approval from Canadian Solar who is one of the three biggest solar companies in the world by revenue and 4 additional panel manufacturer approvals.  Along with manufacturer approvals we have testimonials from end users describing how pleased they are with the performance of SPW.  Please see the sidebar for these approvals and testimonials.

Splicemaster Drying DT Towels

Polywater® SpliceMaster®
DT Dry Towels

Polywater® SpliceMaster® Drying Towels are ideal for wiping excess solvent from electrical cables during splicing. Using rags or recycled cloths that aren’t lint free to wipe cleaners from cable can leave residues that cause tracking and failure. Recycled rags may also contain oils that can then be deposited onto the insulation. Other commercially available towels are not lint free and can contain fiber-bonding adhesives, which will lead to failures.

The Polywater Drying Towels are lint free and contain no fiber-bonding adhesives that could leave a chemical residue. The drying towels are durable with a high tensile strength in both directions, and have excellent absorbancy. These non-linting, non-tearing, and non-snagging wipes have many uses beyond cable cleaning. The wipes are excellent for use in the PE fusion industries for gas piping and water piping applications. The key to a good splice and creating a reliable utility system is to use recommended materials and follow the proper procedures.

J Cable Pulling Lubricant

Polywater® J
Cable Pulling Lubricant

Proven Through Use

Polywater® Lubricant J is the best known of the Polywater lubricants. For three decades, millions of feet of underground and industrial cable have been pulled using Polywater J. This results in both a popular and a proven product.

Friction Reduction

Lubricant J provides good tension reduction in all types of cable pulling. Use it on both electrical and communication cable. Because it has excellent shear resistance, Polywater J reduces friction well in conduit bends. Such bends are a major source of tension in cable pulling. See the sidebar Tech Data Sheet and friction measurement paper for additional friction information.

Clean Use

Polywater J is clean and slow-drying. Lubricant J dries to a thin lubricating film that retains lubricity for months after use. Quick clean-up is especially important in finished indoor use.

Specification Properties

Because the residue does not burn and spread flame like some of the wax lubricants, Polywater Lubricant J is often specified for pulling fire-retardant cables. Additionally, it meets typical LEED® and Green Seal criteria. Lubricant J is UL Listed and water-based Polywater J complies with CARB regulations. Specify lubricant J for long pulls, multiple-bend pulls, or pulls in a hot environment.

Prelube 2000 Cable Blowing Lubricant

Polywater® Prelube 2000
Cable Blowing Lubricant

Polywater Prelube 2000 reduces frictional drag during the blowing of outside plant fiber optic cable into duct. It increases the distance cable can be installed in a continuous length. Prelube 2000 can also be used to blow in empty microducts for future microcable installation. Use Prelube 5000 for blowing the microcables; see related products on the sidebar.

When cable blowing, the cable stops moving when the frictional force resisting movement equals the blowing force producing movement. The maximum blowing distance varies linearly with friction coefficient in straight conduit sections. The friction reduction shown for Prelube 2000 can increase installation distance by a factor of 5 or more versus unlubricated duct. More information on these studies is published in our TeleTopics Newsletter Volume #11 (right sidebar link).

Application: An airtight duct system with pressure-tight splices is critical to maximizing cable installation distance. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions. Duct must be clean, dry and mandrel tested. Clean the duct by blowing a tight-fitting foam sponge through the duct with high pressure. If excess water or dirt exists, repeat this process. Prelube 2000 is effective at a coating thickness of 0.5 mg/cm². See the article reprint on the right sidebar for additional information on duct preparation.

For smoothwall duct and high air speed equipment with no missile, squeeze the recommended amount of Prelube 2000 Lubricant into the duct. Spread the lubricant by blowing a foam carrier through the duct. The squeeze bottle (cat# P-35) is a good package for this type of application.

Prelube 5000 Microcable Blowing Lubricant

Polywater® Prelube 5000
Microcable Blowing Lubricant

Polywater® Prelube 5000 reduces frictional drag during the blowing of small diameter fiber optic microcable into microtube duct. It increases installation distance of cable in a single shot. For blowing conventional fiber cables see sidebar. The improved chemistry allows this product to spread farther and reduce friction at extremely low coating levels.

Application: The microduct must be pressure tight. Clean and dry the tubing by blowing a tight-fitting foam sponge through the microduct with high pressure. If excess water or dirt exits from the microduct, repeat the process. Trapped water or dirt can block the air flow.

Prelube 5000 is effective at quantities as low as 0.05 mg/cm². Squeeze recommended amount of lubricant from the table below into the duct. Quantity can be measured with a syringe or estimated based on duct fill length (table below). Spread lubricant into microduct by blowing a foam carrier or sponge as many times as necessary to avoid lubricant puddling near the entrance of the duct.
